DTC Was Supposed to Save Small Businesses.
Then Amazon Happened.
We thought direct-to-consumer e-commerce would level the playing field. No need for big-box retailers—just social media, Shopify, and a direct line to our customers.
For a moment, it worked.
...Then Amazon stepped in.
Today, small businesses struggle more than ever. Meanwhile, tech giants take a cut from every sale. Who’s really making the money?
✅ Bezos.
✅ Zuck.
✅ Visa.
✅ Walmart.
Every small business now works for them.
Can we change it? Maybe not. But can we try?
It's time to Ditch Amazon.
Even for sellers making decent money on Amazon, the long-term game is rigged—here’s how:
- 1. High Fees, Thin Margins
Amazon’s fees cut deep: Referral fees (8%-15%), advertising fees, and refund penalties that favor the customer (but don't worry, that cost is on you, Amazon keeps their cut!).
- 2. Copycat Products
Amazon tracks your sales—then often launches a cheaper version under its own brand—or they allow overseas companies to copycat and out-compete you with inferior products that look the same but cost less.
- 3. No Customer Ownership
You don’t own your customer data. Amazon blocks direct relationships, killing brand loyalty.
- 4. Unfair Competition
Amazon’s Buy Box favors the lowest price—even if it kills your business and is worse quality for the consumer.
The only real winner? Amazon.
Want to fight back? Start by choosing where you buy.
How to Support Small Businesses
- 1. Buy Direct:
After researching on Amazon, check the brand’s website and purchase directly from them.
- 2. Support Local Stores:
Many small businesses sell through independent retailers—find and shop there instead.
- 3. Use Alternative Marketplaces:
Check platforms like HomesteadGear.com, Etsy, or other niche marketplaces like Bookshop.org.
- 4. Share and Review:
Leave reviews on the small business’s website, Google, or Yelp instead of just Amazon.
- 5. Pay Small Businesses Directly:
Amazon takes a cut from every transaction. If you must use it, consider tipping or subscribing to a brand’s direct email list to buy later.
- 6. Follow & Engage:
Follow small businesses on social media and share their content—it costs nothing and helps them grow.
Even small changes can make a big difference, but it starts with you.
Ditch Amazon. They'll survive, and your favorite small business might, too, if we do it together.
